Mission:

“Writing for Life” was developed with the purpose of immersing young students in the art of writing. While the public school curriculum has set the crucial subject of writing on the back burner, the unique goals serving as the foundation of this program are meant to ignite a student’s interests in written language and cultivate his/her own voice. In addition to emphasizing the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, the program’s activities and lessons are geared toward gaining an understanding of the various genres of composition. Your child will be exposed to poetry, short fiction, peer writing, and will integrate literary elements, structure, and details into his/her writing by using a unique combination of writing techniques.

All Kids Can Learn School believes that writing, as a language art is a vital form of expression and communication  that transcends the boundaries of elementary school, and will be required extensively as students cross the gap from primary to secondary education. All too often, writing education is placed upon the back burner of a school’s curriculum. Writing practice is similar to the mastery of a musical instrument. Without daily practice and emphasis of learned techniques, one will not become adept in their performance.

All Kids Can Learn School has a set of goals that we will help your child to reach: To become a confident, thoughtful reader, and expressive and versatile writer, to have various writing experiences through the composition of responses to daily writing prompts, and to review and reinforce spelling, vocabulary, grammar in order to support growth as a reader and writer.

The writing class starts with a discussion in relation to the daily writing prompt. Instructors will introduce new ideas to the class by the use of various sources from texts and the Internet. The class will brainstorm together and students will be asked to compose a piece of writing within the time allotted for each exercise. After all writing assignments have been completed instructors will edit and comment on all students’ work. The feedback that students receive will support the growth of his/her writing capabilities, and strengthen their overall understanding of the writing process.

Our mission is for students to be able to demonstrate confidence through their writing, so they may compose clear, concise, stylistic pieces of writing, which illuminate purpose, and intelligence. We will help your child become proficient in all their writing endeavors. Our most important goal is for our students to be proud of what they write!

A Step-by-Step Approach

In addition to helping students with the individual components of their application, mentors provide assistance with the “big processes” that are essential to an application’s success as a whole:

1. Planning – Students develop a timetable and strategy for completing each part of their applications.

2. Creative Brainstorming – Mentors work with students to facilitate creative ideas, topics, and approaches for each part of the application.

3. Editing and Revising – As exceptional writers themselves, mentors spend time editing all parts of their students’ applications for form, style, and substance.

4. Deadline Accountability – Students are held to their deadlines, ensuring early completion of their applications and error-free submissions.
